The Department of Environmental Affairs hereby publishes the third national waste information baseline 2011. Determining a waste information baseline for South Africa is essential in order to track the implementation of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (Act 59 of 2008) (RSA, 2009) and the National Waste Management Strategy (DEA, 2012).

This report therefore attempts to provide a national baseline for South Africa of the tonnages of waste recycled, treated, landfilled and exported.
